Abstract

Linear ion trap (LIT) is a successor of 3D-type ion traps in mass spectrometry. In this article, some features of both types of ion traps are compared as regards their ion capture effectivity, space charge capacity and resolution. Application of LIT in proteomic analysis is disscussed using both ESI and MALDI ionisation. Combination of LIT with both FT-ICR-MS and electrostatic FT-MS (orbitrap) is then given as an example of new development in ion trap mass spectrometry analysis.
